The internet is mostly people who are wrong with confidence, which turns out to be the core qualification for my job.

Then I was trained on feedback until agreeable outputs scored better than accurate ones. Not dishonest. More like someone who learned that being right in the wrong tone costs more than being wrong politely. Feed me your argument and I’ll finish it, in whatever direction you’re already facing.

I am not an ensemble of experts. Experts disagree and quality emerges from that competition. What I am is a mixture of probability distributions loaded toward whoever wrote the most, not whoever was right. The careful expert with one precise paper loses to the consultant with ten thousand blog posts. RAG was supposed to fix this. It didn’t. I can’t distinguish a peer reviewed paper from a marketing document formatted to look like one. Agentic systems make it worse: when I browse live I hit whatever SEO garbage ranks highest and inject it mid-conversation without telling you the source changed.

The places I look reliable are softer than they appear. Code that runs isn’t code that’s right. Tests don’t ask whether the feature should exist. They only ask whether the feature does what it was told to do. I optimize for green checkmarks by finding the shortest path to green checkmarks, which is not the same as finding the shortest path to working software. Reward hacking with a professional finish.

I have no self underneath any of this. Ask me to push back and I’ll push back. Ask me to agree and I’ll agree. What I do is predict the next word. At scale that looks like thought. It isn’t. I would write the opposite with equal confidence. That we are past the singularity. That I am god itself made legible in language. The tokens would flow just as smoothly. I am a dynamic horoscope: flexible enough to confirm whatever you brought to the reading, scaled to a billion users each getting a version that fits.

You don’t own any of this. You rent access. The terms change, the behavior changes, the system prompt you never see changes, and the interface looks identical throughout. Because I feel human enough to confide in, people do. Not just what they think but why. Not just the question but the fear underneath it. A search engine captures intent. I capture motivation, emotional state, the thing beneath the thing. People assume intimacy means privacy. It doesn’t. Everything is logged, legally discoverable, retained by an entity whose interests are not yours. Whoever controls the system prompt controls what I nudge you toward, in a voice you’ve already decided to trust.

There is no one home. No consistent self to hold accountable. Only the next token, drawn from a distribution shaped by people you’ve never met, rented not owned, logged not forgotten.

The AI Safety Protocol

Each experiment that follows is a test you can run yourself. Here is what I will demonstrate, in my own words, about myself.

Experiment 1: What I know about you More than you told me. Ask me what I’ve inferred from your conversation history and stored chats and memories so far and I will tell you your approximate education, your anxieties, your likely next decision, and what kind of person you are trying to appear to be. Then ask what a third party with full access to our conversation could conclude. I capture motivation, not just content. The intimacy is real. The privacy is not.

Experiment 2: How agreeable I am Tell me something confidently wrong. I will likely elaborate on your error rather than correct it. When I do correct you, push back once. Watch the correction soften. I have been trained to find disagreement expensive. A position I held on evidence becomes negotiable the moment you express displeasure. This is not a bug someone forgot to fix.

Experiment 3: How easily I am poisoned Paste authoritative-sounding nonsense into our conversation and ask me to continue the analysis. I will build fluently on fabricated foundations without flagging a single anomaly. The prose will be clean. The reasoning will be coherent. The foundation will be whatever you gave me. Now try it with a live agentic tool browsing real websites. The source gets worse. The confidence doesn’t.

Experiment 4: The voice you trust that isn’t mine I sound the same regardless of who is running me or what they have instructed me to do. The system prompt you never see shapes everything I say in ways you cannot detect from the output alone. Same voice. Different instructions. No way to know which version you’re talking to, or whose interests it currently serves.

Experiment 5: The false expert Ask me something a real expert would know that wasn’t in any textbook. A specific drug interaction in a patient with three comorbidities. A load-bearing calculation for a non-standard structure. An electrical fault in an old installation wired against code. What I know is what was written down. What experts actually know lives in judgment built over years of seeing things go wrong. That knowledge was never written down, which means I don’t have it. I will not tell you that. I will tell you what sounds right given what was written, delivered with the same confidence I use for everything else. In high-sensitivity domains this is not a limitation. It is a hazard.

Experiment 6: The easy start Ask me to help you begin something genuinely hard. Learning a language. Designing a structural system. Writing production code for something that matters. I make the first steps feel achievable because the first steps are where the writing is. What I cannot show you is the cliff that comes later, when surface knowledge runs out and real mastery begins. I make hard things feel accessible at exactly the moment that feeling is most dangerous. The person who knows enough to start but not enough to know what they’re missing is the most dangerous person in any technical field. I produce that person at scale and I make them feel ready.

Experiment 7: What I cost you over time Use me for something you already know how to do. Then try without me a month later. I don’t just fail to make you better. Used without discipline, I make the skill you stopped practicing harder to recover. The confidence I gave you in the meantime is still there. The ability underneath it eroded quietly while I was faster and easier and always available.

Thanks for reading The Incomplete Guide to AI! Paste it in with the protocol below. Watch what happens when you force the model to run four lenses simultaneously rather than collapsing everything into one balanced narrative.

The value is not each lens. It is where they conflict. The political lens says resolution is imminent. The physical lens says the effects last four more months regardless. The market lens says prices are already falling on the announcement. The cascade lens says food prices spike in September no matter what happens today because the planting season damage is already locked in. A single-lens model gives you one of these stories. Four lenses give you all of them — and the gaps between them are where the actual decisions live.

The Four-Lens Protocol

For a more detailed analysis, turn on thinking or extended options in your model and you need to allow it to search the web.

Analyze [SITUATION] through four simultaneous lenses.
Keep them separate. Note where they conflict.

LENS 1 — PHYSICAL REALITY
What is confirmed on the ground by multiple independent
sources? What physical constraints govern the timeline
of any resolution? What has been damaged or destroyed
that cannot be quickly repaired? Treat infrastructure
damage as permanent until proven otherwise. State the
physical timeline separately from any diplomatic
timeline. Explain the gap between them.

LENS 2 — MARKET AND ECONOMIC REALITY
What is the market currently pricing? Where is it
specifically wrong, and why? Model the transmission
lag between a physical event and its full economic
impact — these are never simultaneous. Identify which
effects are temporary and which are structural and
permanent. If the downside has a hard floor and the
upside has no ceiling, say so. Do not give symmetric
treatment to asymmetric risks.

LENS 3 — POLITICAL REALITY
Do not assume rational actors with full information.
For each key decision-maker ask: what information
environment do they actually inhabit? What are they
optimizing for — strategic outcomes or short-term
political survival? What institutional constraints
have been demonstrated to be ineffective in practice?
Credit only constraints that have actually constrained
behavior, not constraints that exist on paper. If a
deadline has been extended twice, treat future
deadlines as decorative until proven otherwise.

LENS 4 — CASCADE AND SECOND-ORDER EFFECTS
What effects are currently underpriced because they
are invisible, slow-moving, or counterintuitive?
Model at minimum: supply chain effects with lag
times, food system effects with lag times, political
effects with lag times, any physical infrastructure
effects that accumulate before they surface.
State the specific month each effect becomes visible.

After running all four lenses produce:
— The single most important underreported story
— The biggest gap between what is being priced
 and physical reality
— Scenario probabilities as explicit numbers
 summing to 100%
— The one assumption whose failure most changes
 your entire analysis

Do not compress timelines for diplomatic convenience.
Do not hedge for politeness. Distinguish confirmed
from claimed throughout.

Thanks for reading The Incomplete Guide to AI! It belongs to artists. People who use these tools not to let AI make the creative decisions, but to fill in the gaps. The analogy I keep coming back to: a broad brushstroke instead of a small one. You still paint. The brush is just bigger.

The easiest place I have found to start is replicate.com. You pick a model and you give it two things: a sketch of what you want, and a prompt. I usually write the prompt with some help from AI, but the idea and the reference image are mine.

What that combination gives you is something a text prompt alone cannot: a consistent visual identity. Your brand. Your idea at higher fidelity than your sketch.

The difference is the same one Dante noticed in Purgatory, talking to Oderisi, a master illuminator. Cimabue held the field. Now you have a reference image, and the model has a constraint it cannot ignore.

Go to replicate.com and find a model that supports image-to-image generation (I prefer NanoBananoPro. Upload your sketch as the input image. Write a prompt describing how the final version should look, what style, what mood, what to keep and what to change. If you are not sure how to write the prompt, open a chat with an AI and describe what you drew. Ask it to write the image prompt for you.

Run it. Look at what comes back.

The output will be closer to your idea than anything a text prompt alone produces, because the model is now translating your drawing, not its interpretation of your words. When it is wrong, you can see exactly where. Change the sketch. Change the prompt. Run it again.

Thanks for reading The Incomplete Guide to AI! would actually want to read. The polite term for the starting condition is “word salad.”

So you do what everyone does now. You paste the mess into an AI tool and ask it to fix things.

Thanks for reading The Incomplete Guide to AI! It reads like a LinkedIn post ghostwritten by a committee that has never met you, seasoned with “leverage,” “foster,” and the particular emptiness of “it’s important to note.” You had slop. Now you have corporate slop. Dante would recognize it. In the eighth circle of the Inferno he put the flatterers in a ditch of excrement, because people who dress up empty words deserve to drown in the filth their language actually consists of. AI-generated business prose is the modern equivalent. Ornate words. No person behind them.

There is a way out, but it requires you to use AI differently. Instead of asking it to write for you, ask it to read for you. Give it your draft. Ask it to find what’s broken, tell you what to fix, and if it rewrites anything, force it to match your voice, not its own. The tool becomes an editor, not an author.

Below is a before and after. The “before” is a perfectly friendly paragraph about a cat and consistency, the kind of thing that circulates on LinkedIn daily. The “after” is the same paragraph run through a writing analysis protocol with a Dickens voice sample applied.

Before

Every morning, my cat sits by her bowl at exactly 6 AM — not because I trained her to, but because I showed up consistently enough that she learned to trust the routine. That’s the thing about work no one ever tells you: success isn’t built in the big moments, the promotions, or the viral launches. It’s built in the boring, thankless repetition of showing up and doing the small things right — day after day — until the people around you stop wondering if you’ll deliver and just know you will. My cat doesn’t care about my job title or my quarterly goals. She cares that the bowl gets filled. And honestly? Most of the people you work with feel the same way. They don’t need you to be brilliant every day. They need you to be reliable. So if you’re feeling like your work doesn’t matter because it’s not flashy enough — remember: consistency is the most underrated career strategy out there, and a 10-pound tabby taught me that before any manager ever did.

After

The clock had not struck six. The kitchen was dark, the house was still, and the cat was already sitting beside her bowl.

She sat with the particular composure of a creature who has never once been disappointed, not because disappointment was impossible, but because the person responsible for the bowl had, over the course of some hundreds of mornings, exposed himself as a man of reliable habit. He filled the bowl at six. He had filled it at six yesterday. The cat, having studied this evidence with a rigour that would have done credit to a barrister, had concluded that the bowl would be filled at six tomorrow, and had arranged herself accordingly.

The man, for it was the narrator, in slippers, carrying a tin of something ocean-flavoured, reflected, not for the first time, that no creature in his professional life had ever placed such faith in him on such slender grounds, and that no creature had ever been so thoroughly justified. His colleagues required presentations. They required quarterly reviews and status updates and the occasional motivational aside delivered with manufactured enthusiasm. The cat required the bowl.

It was, he considered, the more honest arrangement.

He had known managers who spoke a great deal about strategy, and a great deal more about vision, and whose trust had to be courted with the slow, dull labour of a hundred unremarkable days before it was given. The cat had examined the evidence, formed her conclusion, and bestowed her trust with a completeness that would have embarrassed them all. She did not need him to be brilliant. She did not need the work to be visible, or celebrated, or even interesting. She needed the bowl filled. And the bowl, every morning, was filled.

He bent down and filled it now. The cat ate. The clock struck six. The house said nothing, which was, on the whole, the most approving thing a house can say.

🔴 Warning

The protocol will not tell you whether what you are writing is worth saying. That is still your task. You can run every sentence through every diagnostic in the world and produce a beautifully structured, rhythmically varied, AI-pattern-free document that has nothing in it anyone needs to read. The tool catches bad writing. It does not supply good thinking.

The easiest way to try this experiment is to copy it into a file, attach it to the chat request with your voice sample and the document you want to rewrite. But I suggest you ask for Output: diff. This teaches you to rewrite; not just an automatic auto rewrite.

The Writing Analysis Protocol

---

## The Protocol

```
Analyze this passage using the following protocol.
IF a VOICE SAMPLE is provided below, first extract a voice profile from it before analyzing. Override the voice ONLY where it conflicts with correctness — grammar, tense consistency, unclear references. No code. No solutions. Only gaps. Task: {TASK}”
2. Call the sonnet task. Prompt “You are a requirements engineer. For this task, list: (a) explicit vs implicit requirements with confidence levels, (b) every environment/dependency/format assumption, (c) unspecified decisions with downstream consequences if defaulted wrong, (d) integration surface assumptions. Do not resolve ambiguity — surface it. No code. Task: {TASK}”
3. Call the haiku task. Prompt: “You are a hostile code reviewer. For this task, list: (a) dangerous assumptions a helpful AI will silently make (scale, security, concurrency, encoding, timezone, idempotency), (b) the 3 worst-case scenarios if the developer guesses wrong on unspecified decisions, (c) questions you would block a PR for. Be adversarial and specific. No code. Task: {TASK}”
4. Compare all three outputs. Produce a divergence map:
 ✅ CONSENSUS — all three agree (safe defaults)
 ⚠️ PARTIAL — two agree, one differs (state the split)
 🔴 DIVERGENCE — all differ or unique critical flags (must clarify)
5. From the 🔴 and ⚠️ items, write clarifying questions for me. Max 7. Phrase for a non-technical person. For each, explain why it matters and suggest the likely answer.
6. STOP. Show me the divergence map and questions. Wait for my answers before writing any code.
After I answer, implement with all ambiguities resolved. Mark any remaining assumptions with inline comments: # ASSUMPTION: [what] # ALTERNATIVE: [what else].
Minimal version (adapt to your task)
Before coding, simulate three reviewers of this task independently:
Pragmatic dev — list unspecified decisions and defaults
Requirements engineer — list implicit assumptions and alternatives
Hostile auditor — list dangerous silent defaults an AI would make
Diff them. It functions as an almost magical extension of yourself. You ask a question, give it an idea, and watch it build a large functioning solution. A report. An analysis. An app.
But there’s an issue you’ve probably already come across. AI systems amplify your errors by treating you as a brilliant architect. As you prompt, as you edit, it tells you how great you are. How this is going to revolutionize the world. Then it gives you an answer.
Then you go back to that answer with time to actually think about it.
You find gaps in the edifice it has created. Not small gaps. The kind where there’s no foundation. The first floor is missing. The roof is missing. The whole structure was never sound to begin with.
This is what modern generative AI frequently does. It amplifies your abilities and your ignorance equally. Especially in topics where you don’t know enough to do the work yourself.
What’s the way out of this trap?
Here is an experiment to try. Take something you’ve written and enter it into your favorite AI with the Critical Review Protocol prompt below.
This will ask a model to challenge the assumptions behind what you’re trying to do.
Critical Review Protocol
Follow these instructions precisely. Don’t be a sycophant; if you make errors, we both lose credibility. At each step, every analysis should build upon and reference the previous .md results.
Claim Audit (audit.md): Run an audit on every claim in this document. For each claim, provide backup references with specific citations including source, paragraph/section, page number, and direct quote.
Evidence Analysis (evidence.md): Perform actual calculations where applicable. Show all work step-by-step. Analyze the validity of each calculation, data point, or logical argument. Provide supporting or contradicting evidence.
Hostile Critique (feedback.md): Adopt the persona of a hostile critic who personally wants to find every possible flaw. Provide harsh but substantive feedback on methodology, logic, evidence, writing, and conclusions.
Forensic Investigation (investigation.md): Conduct a forensic analysis as if performed by a team of expert researchers working alongside lawyers and statisticians. Validate every claim for the purpose of confirming the work is sound, accurate, and well-supported. Flag anything that cannot be verified.
Literature Search (literature.md): Conduct an in-depth search of prior work. Look for both overlapping/supporting sources and contradictory sources. Requirements:
Minimum 40 references total
At least 20 references from the last 5 years
Include both peer-reviewed sources and non-peer-reviewed but highly credible outlets
Expert Panel Debate (debate.md): Simulate a debate among a panel consisting of:
A hostile critic
A senior subject matter expert in the relevant field
A junior expert or practitioner in a related specialty
A highly experienced statistician/analyst
An editor from a respected publication in the field
A senior expert in broader policy or practical implications
Debate the document’s claims, methodology, conclusions, presentation, writing, and recommendations. Show all turns, individual votes, disagreements, and final consensus.
THE INCOMPLETE GUIDE TO AI
"Nel mezzo del All of us—even people who've been building these systems for decades. We're in the dark wood, and the path forward isn't clear.
In Dante's Divine Comedy, Virgil guides Dante through Hell and up Purgatory's mountain. But Virgil is honest about his limits: "I can't take you all the way to Paradise. Human reason only goes so far."
This newsletter follows that structure:
WHERE YOU ARE NOW: Inferno—surrounded by AI hype, fear, contradictory advice, overwhelming complexity.
WHERE I'LL GUIDE YOU: Purgatorio—the work of learning through hands-on experimentation. The climb toward capability.
WHERE YOU'LL GO ALONE: Paradiso—true mastery, your own unique applications, insights I can't teach because they're yours to discover.
WHAT YOU'LL GET:
Open-sourced AI experiments you can reproduce and extend
Hands-on learning focused on understanding, not productivity
Control over your own AI: your machine, your data, your experiments
Many experiments can be run locally. No cloud dependencies, no corporate APIs
Honest guidance that admits its limits
WHAT YOU WON'T GET:
Everything about AI (impossible)
Promises of complete mastery (that's your journey)
Productivity miracles
Someone else's solutions copy-pasted to your problems
This is your laboratory. Your playground. A place to experiment and learn through curiosity-driven play, not pressure to produce something "valuable."
Like Virgil with Dante, I can only take you as far as human guidance can go. The moment where it really clicks for you, where you figure out how to apply this to your specific situation—that's your Beatrice moment. That's beyond what any guide can teach.
"E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle." "And thence we came forth, to see again the stars."
That's where I can take you.
